Oud comes from the wood of the Agar tree in Southeast Asia. When the tree is affected by mould of a certain type, it produces a dark, scented resin, often called “liquid gold”. The word “Oud” refers to both the resin-saturated wood and the oil distilled from it. Oud is expensive partly because it is so rare: on some estimates, fewer than 2% of wild Agar trees produce any.
